Oddly enough, I ran 5.7 before it was "okay", and still had amdgpu issues. The GPU is Gigabyte, and I've had numerous problems with amdgpu running Manjaro, Arch, and other Arch flavors (but it worked okay with Mint and Xubuntu) until 5.7. I actually thought AMD was better and built my current system on that. Not even mentioning macOS where you don’t even have to worry about drivers but alas Apple has no nVidia support so that sucks ass 🤷🏻🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ So bottom line is they kinda both suck compared to windows where it’s plug and play and virtually dumb proof.

Thus you had to manually edit a file in the OS to make it report as if it was a 18.04 version and then voila the driver installed. After a few hours of searching the web, I found that the error of unsupported OS was because the driver only worked by design in 18.04.

With the default driver you get a gimped AMD card (my case a Radeon VII) and installing for the first time the drivers from AMD was a pain because I couldn’t get them to install on 20.04.

Installing latest drivers and CUDA is easy.ĪMD boy oh boy, nothing worked outside of the box but at least you get a working display. Once you get a proprietary driver set it should be gtg but not guaranteed. NVidia sucks outside of the box and you may either hit a login loop or no display upon boot depending on what driver is selected by default. My experience with both in Ubuntu 18.04 and 20.04 for compute tasks:
